REVIEW: Gourmet small plates aplenty at Burdock – Montcalm Hotel

Pork Belly & Lobster - Burdock montcalm Hotel
Who doesn’t love a spread of smaller dishes over one large one? Tapas, tasting menus, street food…it’s not been difficult to see a certain foodie-trend gradually taking shape over the last 5 years. So it makes perfect sense to see why Burdock have followed suit. Located in the foyer of the Montcalm Royal London House Hotel, this quaint bistro are offering an extremely varied array of sharing plates and light bites for the indecisive diner in you.

We were recommended to try 3-4 dishes a head, and so began our spread with a portion of their Lobster and Short Rib Taco’s., the latter certainly being the stand-out of the two, with sumptuous and smokey beef short-rib coming pleasantly paired with a playful spatter of pickled red cabbage.

This menu may come across to some a little higgledy-piggledy, but most certainly in an endearing way. It’s not often you’ll see an extremely refined dish of Pork Belly and Lobster next to a Double-Cheeseburger with BBQ onions. But why not? Opting in refinement’s favour, the beautifully presented pork belly is high in well rendered fat and flavour (very little chewing required here!), silky carrot puree adding further depth and richness, all lovingly topped with a tender and extremely fresh lobster tail. Not the most natural pairing perhaps, but certainly worked for us.

Next we found ourselves chowing down on Kentucky Fried Skate Wings…yep, a first for us too. And dare we say, a game changer may be on the cards here. Unbelievably flaky soft skate flesh, coated in a peppery crunchy crust, this brought home all the feelings of  Kentucky Fried Chicken, only with much less guilt, and MUCH cleaner hands post consumption.

With a large selection of sandwiches, salad jars, desserts and many more small plates to choose from, we’ll certainly be back in no time to carry on our attack of this intriguing menu.
